Chapter 15

“I didn’t make you wait too long, did I?” Jared asked.

He sat down at the table, in the exact same spot that Sheriff Trent had threatened her. She tried to suppress a shiver.

“I’ve been here all morning, talking with Saskia,” Clover answered. “We had a lot of work to do.”

“Anything noteworthy?” he asked. He seemed genuinely interested, and she really wanted to tell him.

“Not really,” she said.

The last thing she wanted was for Jared to become involved in her investigation. She’d never forgive herself if he got hurt over something she’d instigated.

“Can I say you look beautiful today?” he said.

“Didn’t you already tell me that this morning?” she said.

“I can’t really remember,” he said. “I can say it as many times as I want, though, because it’s true.”

Jared ordered them some teas, and Clover found herself examining his face in detail. In the light he looked even more attractive, perhaps even beautiful. She wanted to stroke his face, to feel how smooth and flawless it was.

“Were you really going to kill yourself last night?” she asked.

What the hell are you thinking? You don’t ask him a question like that!

“I thought about it,” he admitted. “For a second there I thought I might actually do it.”

“I’m sorry,” she said.

“Maybe if you hadn’t been there...I don’t know. We’ll probably never know.”

“I’m glad I saved you.”

Mrs. Crowther placed a tray on the table with a steaming teapot, two cups, a jug of milk, and a cup of sugar. The old woman seemed mighty interested in the two of them. Clover wished she’d just mind her own business.

“I’ve had those thoughts before myself,” said Clover. “I know how dark and lonely they can make you feel.”

“I noticed the scars last night,” he said.

Clover felt self-conscious whenever someone mentioned them. It was a hot day and she really wanted to wear a t-shirt, but she wore something long-sleeved to cover her scars.

“Cutting takes away the pain,” said Clover, “if only for a brief time.”

“What pain?” he asked.

“Are you serious?” she asked him. “Everybody knows about my pain. I was the best gossip this town had since the hurricane blew down the chapel. You could say I’m infamous.”

“I don’t listen to gossip. You tell me your story.”

She thought about Frankie, and his now sudden connection to Sheriff Trent. She couldn’t tell Jared everything, but she could give him a glimpse of the horrors she’d been through.

“My boyfriend died, and I kind of had a breakdown,” she said.

“That must have been tough,” he said.

“It was a nightmare that I never thought I’d get through. Even talking about it now is hard, but I’ve gotten by, with therapy and the help of my friend Saskia. I’ve stopped cutting myself, and my life isn’t nearly as dark as it once was.”

“Were your parents there for you?”

“If they were, I might have been able to get over it much quicker. No, my parents are a cause of different miseries in my life. My mother is an alcoholic and my father is having an affair with another woman.
